EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent with an Associate Degree in accounting (preferred).

  • Two to Five years of related work experience.

  • Must be 21 years of age or older. Valid Virginia Driver’s License; good oral and written communication skills; and clean criminal history record. Drug screen and background check will be performed.

 

GENERAL DEFINITION AND PURPOSE OF WORK:

 

Position is assigned accounting and technical work involving the preparation and maintenance of fiscal or related records. 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:

 

This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of negligible amount of force constantly to move objects, up to 10 pounds of force frequently and some light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally.  Work requires stooping, reaching, fingering, grasping and repetitive motions; keying data/word processing requires the ability to perform repetitive tasks involving fine motor skills. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging information and instructions by means of the spoken work; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the work in not subject to adverse environmental conditions.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

 

  • Performs and processes all phases of accounting for inmate accounts as according to generally accepted accounting principles;

  • Verifies and posts daily cash transactions and deposits;

  • Reconciles bank statements to accounting system in a timely manner;

  • Prepares journal entries as needed;

  • Maintains and compiles data for all inmate reporting;

  • Reconciles accounting data in a timely manner based on schedules;

  • Collects information and compiles data for special and periodic reports;

  • Prepares the annual Unclaimed Property Report for inmate accounts;

  • Assists independent auditors as required for the annual audit of inmate accounts;

  • Communicate with bank officials and other outside vendors and contractors regarding accounts;

  • Communicate with inmates or the inmate’s family regarding accounts;

  • Performs other accounting tasks as required;

  • Position may require overtime at times such as the annual audit or for special projects.

 

EXAMPLES OF EXPECTED DECISION MAKING:

 

Position interprets policies and procedures related to accounting actions and makes decisions in the application of laws and regulations.  Responds to questions from inmates regarding the inmate’s personal account.

                   

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles, terminology and methods;

  • Ability to maintain accurate financial records;

  • Ability to prepare reports and statements;

  • Ability to keep files organized and stored accurately;

  • Knowledge of computer applications including Word, Excel and/or other financial software;

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, management and the general public;

  • Ability to establish and follow detailed work procedures and to perform mathematical computations with speed and accuracy;

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions and to work independently and as part of a team.
