  • High School or General Education Diploma required. Associate Degree from an accredited college or university with major course emphasis on Corrections, Criminal Justice, Criminology, Sociology, Business Administration, or related fields preferred. 

  • Experience in corrections with public, private, or military agency, at least two (2) years of experience with Middle River Regional Jail.

  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

  • Not have received a Written Reprimand within 12 months prior to this announcement date or have been suspended within 36 months prior to this announcement date.

  • Maintain certification as a Jail Officer in the State of Virginia.

  • Have a recent annual performance evaluation rating of “satisfactory” or higher in all rated areas except in those instances in which an employee has no performance appraisal on record in their Personnel File.

  • Possess a valid Virginia driver’s license.

  • Staff may submit a waiver request for an eligibility criterion.  Request will give specific reasons for the waiver of the criteria.

Basic Skills and Abilities Required


Ability to think and act quickly in medical, fire, and other emergency situations; knowledge and skill in crisis-intervention, counseling techniques, and conflict resolution; thorough knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local laws; knowledge of principles of supervision; knowledge of community resources, both public and private; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; knowledge of interpersonal communication skills; ability to effectively communicate with inmates, staff, and public; ability to obtain and analyze statistical data; ability to interpret court orders; ability to perform mathematical calculations; ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of security and non-security staff; ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationship with security and non-security staff; ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationship with staff, inmates, and public; skills in coordinating activities in their assigned area; and knowledge of computers.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates subordinate staff.

  • Prepares and submits required mandated Jail, State and/or Federal reports.

  • Compiles, maintains, and establishes required files for the Jail.

  • Disseminates information as required by policy.

  • Serves as a liaison between other departments, courts, or any other agency,  as needed.

  • Participates and conducts meetings with management and subordinates.

  • Reviews files and conditions of all inmates assigned to area of responsibilities.

  • Coordinates the transfer of inmates within and outside the facility.

  • Updates changes in computers as needed.

  • Interviews inmates.

  • Conducts inspections of their assigned area.

  • Performs subordinate’s duties during their absence.

  • Schedules, prioritizes, and coordinates work in assigned area.

  • Performs additional duties or assignments by the Superintendent and/or     Supervisor.

  • Escorts inmates within and outside the facility.

  • Responds to inmate grievances/complaints.

  • Completes and/or reviews employee performance standard evaluations,     training documents, and reports for accuracy, completeness, and     compliance with jail policies.

  • Salary Range: $62,350 - $111,622
