Middle River Regional Jail is seeking a full-time Director of Nursing.
 
The Director of Nursing (DON) is a Registered Nurse who administers professional nursing care and service to inmates housed in the jail facility. This position is responsible for administrative duties including supervising other nursing staff as well as providing nursing care. Work is performed in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures. The Director of Nursing reports to the Chief of Medical.

  • Oversees the nursing operations at Middle River Regional Jail

  • Performs evaluations for all nursing Personnel.

  • Establishes an efficient work place by paying attention to policy and procedures.

  • Schedules nursing personnel including approving time off and approving of hours worked (KRONOS).

  • Responds to nursing and inmate related issues in a timely manner.

  • Orders medical supplies and equipment as needed.

  • Performs various clerical and administrative duties.

  • Possesses knowledge of nursing theory and practice as well as; pharmacology, immunization, medical supply, medical administration, and preventive medicine.

  • Acts in an administrative capacity in the absence of Chief of Medical.

  • Guides staffing procedures and assists with orientation of new staff.

  • Maintains confidentiality on information.

  • Establishes short and long-term goals for the Medical Department.

  • Delegates provider orders and ensures they are carried out.

  • Assists with sick call and obtaining Medicaid for inmates.

  • Delegates duties and gives advice or instructions to other nurses or officers concerning medical matters.

  • Ensures proper documentation of EMR and EMAR.

  • Possesses knowledge of various forms and required paperwork.

  • Ensures medications are reordered for inmates in a timely manner.

  • Possesses knowledge of how to schedule outside medical appointments.

  • Exchanges information with oncoming shift.

  • Oversees and assists with everyday nursing duties.

  • Provides and arranges additional training for nursing staff, as needed.

  • Administers medication and treatments as ordered by health care provider to inmates.

  • Performs additional duties or assignments by the Superintendent and/or Supervisor.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • High school graduate or equivalent.

  • Must be twenty-one (21) years of age or older.

  • Must be a citizen of the United States or legally employable in the United States.

  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) instructor for Medical Professionals.

  • Completion of an accredited nursing program leading to a license as a Registered Nurse, preferably a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.

  • Must possess a license to practice as a Registered Nurse issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience preferably in a correctional facility of management/leadership.

  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements may be substituted.
