Systems Administrator

  • An associate degree or better in Computer Science, Information Technology/Management, Engineering or a related field.

  • Five years of related work experience, of which at least three years must have been in an administrative or management capacity in an Information Technology setting.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

  • Satisfactory completion of all requirements established by the Middle River Regional Jail within 1 year of date of employment.

  • Understanding of operations within secured physical environment.

  • Work experience may substitute for education.

  • Successful completion of a criminal records check.

  • Internal candidates must meet qualifications outlined in MRRJ Policy 1.14.

Basic Skills and Abilities Required: 


Knowledge of applicable best practices in data and backup management, network administration, and cyber-security. Ability to manage multiple staff, projects, and services simultaneously. Management and production of a budget. Knowledge in planning/evaluating programs and services; in providing the necessary coordination among divisions and units.  Ability to analyze difficult problems/ situations and take an effective course of action; to handle crisis situations requiring tact, diplomacy, understanding, fairness, and good judgment; ability to deal firmly and courteously with staff, inmates, and public. Ability to analyze complex and diverse data. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.



Preferred Experience:


The preferred applicant may possess:

  • Expert experience in management of servers (AD, Group Policy, WSUS, file shares, etc.)

  • Expert experience in patch management, system backups, and cyber security policy

  • Laptop/Desktop user support and troubleshooting

  • Experience with security surveillance networks and infrastructure

  • Wireless Network Management (Cisco Meraki preferred)

  • Experience in Crystal Reports and ability to design and provide customized reports

  • Management of website and services

  • Knowledge of data and records retention laws and ability to provide compliance

  • Ability to train and orient staff on Jail Information Technology policy and procedure

  • Experience with asset tracking and mobile device management (MDM)

  • Experience supervising projects and vendors

  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, and the individual must possess a structured, methodical approach to systems administration

  • Documenting, implementation and improvement of processes and procedure

  • Cisco and Microsoft Certifications a plus

Duties and Responsibilities:


This is an administrative and supervisory position involving the management of information technology resources and personnel at the Jail. The Systems Administrator is responsible for directing and supervising staff assigned, the core network functions of the Jail networks, and oversight of security network operations at the facility. Establishment of good relationships with the jail staff, inmates, and public is essential. The incumbent has wide latitude for independent judgment in making decisions subject to the Standard Operating Procedures and Executive Orders of the Jail and all applicable laws and standards. Work requires considerable initiative and responsibilities in management of financial activities, planning, budgeting, directing, coordinating, analysis, and development and implementation of numerous Information Technology activities. Under the direction of the Superintendent or designee, the incumbent is responsible for directing and supervising staff, subordinate Officers and civilian personnel assigned.  The incumbent has wide latitude of independent judgment in making decisions subject to the general orders of the Jail and all applicable laws.

  • Salary Range: $49,387 - $86,705
